Health Literacy in the ACT

5 minutes

Welcome to the Canberra Health Literacy website

Health literacy is about people having the knowledge, skills and confidence to:

  • find, understand, and use health information
  • be active partners in their care, and
  • navigate health and social support systems.

The Canberra Health Literacy website aims to help make our health system easier for patients to navigate.

The website is full of health literacy information and resources for the ACT and region, for health and community services, clinical and allied health professionals – because health literacy is everyone’s business.

Health literacy is about people’s ability to get, understand and act on health information in their daily lives. It supports better health and safe, high-quality health care.

Health literacy is the product of both individual and environmental factors. It is influenced by how well community and health sector staff communicate and support consumers to navigate our complex health and community support systems.

The tools, resources and information provided here will help to improve the quality and safety of health care in the ACT. Some resources are relevant to any setting, while others are specific to the ACT.
